Washington Residence

Haddonfield, NJ

Awarded Best Residential Living Spaces Design by American Society of Interior Designers

After living here for more than 20 years, the owners of this 3-story, 114-year-old American Foursquare home on Washington Avenue in Haddonfield reached out to BCD for a serious upgrade. The attic was a jumble of unoccupiable mechanical/storage spaces with a tiny, deteriorated bathroom that the homeowners never entered. The kitchen that had been redone when they first moved in was also due for a refresh. And they wanted to make the home more accessible to accommodate aging family members who might need to use the updated third-floor space.

To realize this vision, BCD first updated the kitchen with state-of-the-art appliances and meticulous detailing. We also removed a chimney, re-supported the building, and added a hidden elevator - a process that required a careful touch for a building constructed in the 19th century.

But the attic was the signature update that earned special recognition from the American Society of Interior Designers. It’s now a spacious, sunlit, fully wheelchair accessible, 5-star-hotel-penthouse-like living experience that all three generations can enjoy. It flows and seamlessly connects a lounge, multiple bathrooms, bedroom, hidden laundry, bar, dining area.
