Rubin Residence

Haddonfield, NJ

Our clients’ home was originally built as a 25’x25’ closed box in 1919 in the American Four Square architectural style. The stair was a massive block in the middle that obstructed views and circulation.

Fast forward 105 years to 2024. We unlocked and untwisted the Four Square plan, creating a direct line of sight from front door, through a brand new window wall, into the wide open landscape. To optimize efficiency, we tucked 90% of the kitchen functions under a straight-run stair with a custom slat wall, and ensured each of our clients’ daily needs has a spot in the opened home. We balanced clean white surfaces with fresh black accents and soft teal touches. Budget management was a priority since day one and became an aesthetic expression - with simple materials, exposed structure and minimal finishes.
